Bio
Adam Steele recently moved (January 2007) to Eugene, Oregon to train with famed middle distance coach Frank Gagliano and the Oregon Track Club – Elite. Steele plans to train with Coach Gagliano until the 2008 Olympic trials at Hayward Field in Eugene. Steele found most of his success during college competing in the long sprints for the University of Minnesota under the tutelage of Phil Lundin. The decision to move up to the 800-meter race was encouraged by coaches and peers in the track and field community. With new goals set he began challenging those goals during the spring of 2006. The first year brought many ups and downs with the transition to a new coach, new training, and being away from the team atmosphere. Since completing his college eligibility in 2004, he continued to train at the facilities on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis, MN.
Steele concluded his collegiate competitive career at Minnesota in 2004 as an eight-time All-American. The pinnacle of his collegiate career came at the 2003 NCAA outdoor championships in Sacramento, California. Steele came away with the 400-meter title in a school-record time of 44.57 seconds, becoming Minnesota’s first-ever sprint national champion and first outdoor champion in 30 years. His winning time was the fastest in the world at that point of the season and ended up as the third-fastest time in the world during the 2003 season. Steele earned a spot in the United States 4x400-meter relay pool for the 2003 World Outdoor Championships in Paris, France. He subsequently earned a gold medal on the 4x400-meter relay.
Steele also helped Minnesota’s 4x400-meter relay team to a runner-up finish at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Championships in a school-record time of 3:02.33. He earned five more All-America certificates as a member of other Gophers’ 4x400-meter relay teams. He also captured the 2003 Big Ten 600-meter title and won a number of Big Ten titles as a member of the 4x400-meter and distance medley relay teams. Steele’s collegiate career culminated with him being named a Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor recipient, the highest conference award bestowed on a student-athlete.
A native of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Steele was a 1999 graduate of Eden Prairie High School. Steele completed his undergraduate studies in Sociology – Law, Crime, and Deviance in 2004 while at the University of Minnesota. Steele returned to the classroom after one year off to complete his Master’s Degree in Sports Management in December 2006.
